The History of the Search for the Adamic, Angelic, Celestial, Demonic, Enochian, and Primordial Otherworldly Alphabets, Languages, Scripts, Symbols, Tongues, and Writings

Adamic, Angelic, Celestial, Demonic, Enochian, and Primordial Otherworldly Alphabets, Languages, Scripts, Symbols, Tongues, and Writings
1. Introduction: The Quest for the Adamic Tongue

The history of Western esotericism is intrinsically linked to the history of language. Since the early days of the Renaissance, philosophers, magicians, and theologians have sought to recover the lingua adamica—the primordial language spoken by Adam in the Garden of Eden. This search is not merely linguistic but ontological; the premise holds that the original language of humanity possessed an inherent power to define and control reality, a power lost during the confusion of tongues at the Tower of Babel. In this worldview, to speak the true name of a thing is to command it. This report provides an exhaustive examination of the three primary "spirit languages" that have emerged from this quest: the Enochian language of Dr. John Dee and Edward Kelley, the Celestial and Malachim scripts cataloged by Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa, and the modern Language of Enns utilized in Theistic Demonolatry.

Furthermore, this analysis explores the complex mythological substructures that support these linguistic systems. We investigate the cryptic narratives of Lilith and Naamah, who would have spoken the Adamic language and still would to this day, and the specific legends regarding their interactions with biblical patriarchs such as Solomon and Enoch. By synthesizing historical data, linguistic analysis, and esoteric folklore, we aim to disentangle the constructed from the received, and the ancient from the modern, providing a definitive account of how humanity has attempted to speak with the divine and the infernal.

2. The Enochian Language: The Angelic Vernacular

2.1 Historical Origins: The Dee and Kelley Workings (1583–1589)

The linguistic system now universally known as "Enochian" was never referred to by that name by its originators. Dr. John Dee, the court astronomer, mathematician, and advisor to Queen Elizabeth I, referred to it variously as the "Angelical Language," the "Celestial Speech," the "First Language of God," or simply "Adamical" . . The term "Enochian" is a later convention, derived from Dee’s assertion that the biblical patriarch Enoch was the last human to master the language before it was hidden from humanity due to their wickedness after the Tower of Babel.

The reception of this language is one of the most well-documented events in the history of magic. Between 1582 and 1589, Dee engaged in intense "spiritual conferences" or scrying sessions. As Dee himself was unable to perceive the spirits, he relied on the mediumship of Edward Kelley, a figure of complex reputation—part alchemist, part necromancer, and a convicted forger.  . Despite Kelley's dubious character, the material produced during these sessions exhibits a complexity and internal consistency that has baffled scholars for centuries.

The language was not received effortlessly. It arrived through a laborious process involving a series of complex grids known as the Tabula Sancta and the Great Table of the Watchers. Kelley would report seeing an angel—often Gabriel or Nalvage—pointing to letters on these tables using a rod. Dee would transcribe the letters as Kelley called them out. This process was complicated by the angels' insistence that the letters be dictated backwards or in scattered patterns to prevent the inadvertent unleashing of immense magical power during the dictation phase.

The corpus of Enochian material is divided into two distinct parts:

  1. The Liber Loagaeth (Book of the Speech of God): A collection of 49 large letter tables received in 1583. The linguistic content of these tables is highly repetitive and lacks obvious grammar, resembling glossolalia or a cipher text.

  2. The Claves Angelicae (Angelic Keys or Calls): Received in 1584 in Krakow, Poland. These consist of 48 poetic incantations (or 19 keys, with the last key adapted for 30 "Aethyrs"). Unlike the Loagaeth material, the Calls possess a consistent syntax, a definable vocabulary, and a translation into English provided by the angels.

2.2 The Enochian Alphabet and Script

The Enochian writing system comprises 21 letters. These characters were first revealed to Kelley in a vision on May 6, 1583, initially appearing in a "simple" form before resolving into a more ornate "talismanic" script.    The letters are written from right to left, mimicking the Semitic writing direction of Hebrew and Arabic, yet their shapes are unique, bearing little resemblance to any known human alphabet.

The letters serve a dual function: they are phonetic representations of sound and magical talismans in their own right. In the Enochian magical system, the very shape of the letter is a conduit for the specific energetic frequency it represents. The alphabet includes:

  • Pa (B)

  • Veh (C/K)

  • Ged (G/J)

  • Gal (D)

  • Or (F)

  • Un (A)

  • Graph (E)

  • Tal (M)

  • Gon (I/Y)

  • Na (H)

  • Ur (L)

  • Mals (P)

  • Ger (Q)

  • Drun (N)

  • Pal (X)

  • Med (O)

  • Don (R)

  • Ceph (Z)

  • Vau (U/V)

  • Fam (S)

  • Gisg (T)

The phonology of Enochian is harsh, sibilant, and rhythmic. It includes sounds and clusters that are difficult for English speakers, yet the "calls" are designed to be vibrated or chanted.

2.3 Linguistic Analysis: Constructed or Revealed?

The status of Enochian as a "true" language is a subject of intense debate between linguists and occultists.

The Skeptical Linguistic Perspective: The most rigorous sceptical academic analysis of Enochian was conducted by Australian linguist Donald Laycock. His findings suggest that Enochian is not a precursor to human language, but rather a constructed language (conlang) heavily influenced by the native tongue of its channellers.

  • Syntax: Laycock demonstrated that Enochian syntax is almost identical to 16th-century English. It follows a rigid Subject-Verb-Object (SVO) word order.

  • Morphology: The verb conjugations, while present, are erratic. For example, the verb "to be" appears in forms that do not follow a consistent logical pattern typical of natural languages, but rather resemble an English speaker's idea of what a complex foreign language should look like.

  • Phonology: The distribution of vowels and consonants in Enochian mirrors English statistical probability. This suggests that Kelley, consciously or unconsciously, filtered the "angelic" transmission through his own linguistic faculties.

The Occult/Esoteric Perspective: Practitioners of Enochian magic, such as those in the Golden Dawn or the A.'.A.'., offer a different interpretation. They argue that the English-like syntax is a necessary concession to the human mind's limitations. The "Angels" communicated in a way Dee and Kelley could process.

  • Holistic Language: In this view, Enochian is not merely a tool for information transfer but a system of "cratylic" magic—where the sound of the word contains the essence of the thing named. The Liber Loagaeth is seen not as random gibberish but as a higher-order dimensional language that transcends linear grammar.

  • A Priori Vocabulary: While the grammar may be English-like, the vocabulary is largely a priori. Words like Iad (God), Zacare (Move), and Micalzo (Mighty) have no clear etymological roots in Latin, Greek, or Hebrew, distinguishing Enochian from other Renaissance artificial languages.

2.4 Extant Humans and Contemporary Speakers

Contemporary Communities and Figures:

  1. The Golden Dawn Lineage: The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, founded in the late 19th century, integrated Dee's system into its Inner Order rituals. Today, thousands of practitioners in various offshoot orders (e.g., The Cicero lineage, the Regardie lineage) recite Enochian Calls as part of the "Opening by Watchtower" ritual.

  2. Thelema and the A.'.A.'.: Aleister Crowley was a dedicated student of Enochian, famously performing the "Vision and the Voice" workings in the Algerian desert. Modern Thelemites, particularly those in the teaching order A.'.A.'. and the Temple of the Silver Star, study the language intensively. David Shoemaker, a Chancellor of the Temple of the Silver Star, is a key figure in preserving this lineage.

  3. Academic and Occult Scholars:

    • Dr. Aaron Leitch: A scholar-practitioner who has authored comprehensive dictionaries and grimoires (e.g., The Essential Enochian Grimoire). He is perhaps one of the most fluent "speakers" in terms of understanding the internal logic and pronunciation of the language.

    • Lon Milo DuQuette: A prolific author and magician who has popularized Enochian magic for modern audiences, emphasizing its practical application over dry theory.

    • Dr. Alexander Cummins: A historian and "cunning-man" who teaches courses on Angelical speech, bridging the gap between academic history and practice.

  4. Online Micro-Communities: There are active communities on platforms like Reddit and Discord where enthusiasts attempt to construct "conversational Enochian" or use it for creative writing, though these efforts often diverge from the orthodox Dee/Kelley system.

In summary, the "extant speakers" are the high-level initiates of Western ceremonial magic orders and the scholar-practitioners who maintain the tradition. The Enochian Alphabet is also featured in Terry Pratchett's Discworld novel Making Money.

3. Celestial and Angelic Scripts: The Ciphers of the Kabbalists

Distinct from the spoken language of Enochian are the "Angelic Scripts" or "Alphabets." These are not languages with independent grammar but substitution ciphers (abjads) used to encode Hebrew< Aramaic, Greek, or Latin. They are visually distinct and historically separate from Dee’s work.

3.1 The Celestial Alphabet (Scriptura Coelestis)

Described by Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa in De Occulta Philosophia (1531), the Celestial Alphabet is perhaps the most visually recognizable of the magical scripts.

  • Structure: The letters are formed by small circles and straight lines. They map directly to the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet.

  • Origins: Agrippa claimed this script originated from "scholars studying angelic kingdoms" and that the shapes were derived from the constellations (the "stars" in the "celestial" heavens). It is a visual representation of the Hermetic maxim "As above, so below".

  • Usage: Its primary use is talismanic. A magician wishing to invoke the protection of the Archangel Michael might inscribe Michael's name (מיכאל) on a lamen using Celestial characters rather than Hebrew letters, believing the script itself holds sympathetic resonance with the angelic hierarchy.

3.2 Malachim (The Writing of the Angels)

The Malachim script (Hebrew for "Angels" or "Kings") is another alphabet popularized by Agrippa.

  • Visual Style: Unlike the geometric Celestial script, Malachim is fluid and ornate, featuring "crowns" (tagin) similar to those found on the letters of a Sefer Torah. It implies a regal, authoritative mode of communication.

  • Persistence: Malachim has shown remarkable longevity, adopted by high-degree Freemasonry for use in cryptograms and secret inscriptions within lodges. It remains in use by some Masonic bodies to this day.

3.3 Transitus Fluvii (Passing the River)

The third major script is Transitus Fluvii.

  • Symbolism: The name refers to the "Crossing of the River" (Euphrates) by the Jewish exiles returning to Jerusalem. It symbolizes a transition from bondage to spiritual freedom, or from the profane world to the sacred.

  • Usage: Like the others, it is used for inscription. It is less common than Celestial or Malachim but appears frequently in grimoires related to the Keys of Solomon.

4. The Language of Enns: The Demonic Tongue

While Enochian and the Angelic scripts have a clear Renaissance lineage, the "Language of Enns" is often considered a phenomenon of modern occultism, specifically within the subculture of Theistic Demonolatry.

4.1 Definition and Structure

An "Enn" is a short, mantric phrase associated with a specific demon from the Ars Goetia or other hierarchies. They are chanted to invoke the presence of the entity or to enter a meditative state attuned to its energy.

  • Examples:

    • Satan: "Tasa Reme Laris Satan".

    • Lilith: "Renich Viasa Avage Lilith Lirach".

    • Bael: "Ayer Secore On Ca Ba'al".

Linguistically, Enns do not function like Enochian. They lack a defined grammar, syntax, or morphology. They appear to be a pidgin or "macaronic" language—a blend of distorted Latin, Hebrew, and unknown phonemes designed for vibrational quality rather than semantic clarity. For example, "Liftoach" (often used in Enns) is clearly Hebrew for "to open," but words like "Tasa" or "Reme" have no agreed-upon etymology.

4.2 Origins: The Mystery of Alexander Willit

The origin of the Enns is a subject of contention. The primary source for all Enns is the "Dukante Hierarchy," a system of demonolatry introduced to the public in the late 20th century by author S. Connolly.

  • The Claim: Connolly cites the work of an ancestor or predecessor named Alexander Willit, claiming he "deemed" these invocations as "Demonic Enns" in 1585.

  • Historical Reality: There is no historical evidence for an occultist named Alexander Willit in the 16th century, nor do Enns appear in any grimoires from that period (such as the Lemegeton, Pseudomonarchia Daemonum, or Dee's diaries). The timeline of 1585 would place Willit as a contemporary of Dee and Kelley, yet he is absent from the historical record.

  • Conclusion: Some claim that the Enns are a modern creation (late 20th century), possibly channeled or constructed by the Dukante family or Connolly herself, and retroactively attributed to a fictionalized 16th-century lineage to lend them authority—a common practice in occultism known as "pseudepigrapha".

5. The Mythological Nexus: Lilith, Naamah, Enoch, and Solomon

5.1 Lilith and Naamah in the Zohar

In the Zohar, the foundational text of Kabbalah, Lilith and Naamah are the archetypal "Mothers of Demons" who, still extant today, would have spoken the Adamic, Angelic, Celestial, Demonic, Enochian or Primordial otherworldly language.

  • Lilith: The first Eve, who refused to submit to Adam, uttered the Ineffable Name, and fled to the Red Sea. She is the strangler of infants and the seducer of men sleeping alone.

  • Naamah: Identified as the sister of Tubal-Cain (Gen 4:22), she is described as a "great beauty" who led the Watchers (fallen angels) astray. She acts as a succubus and is often partnered with Lilith in the demonic hierarchy.

  • The Demonic Partnership: Together, they are consorts of Samael (sometimes conflated with Satan) and rule over the Qlippoth (shells) of impurity. They are specifically barred from Paradise (Eden) due to their fully human yet fully demonic nature from copulating with demons.

5.2 The Judgment of Solomon

  • The Narrative: According to the Zohar (Leviticus 19a) and later commentaries like the Emek HaMelekh, the two "harlots" who appeared before Solomon in the famous biblical judgment (1 Kings 3:16) were not human women, but Lilith and Naamah in disguise.

  • The Scene: They came to Solomon's court—often equated in Midrash as a terrestrial reflection of Paradise or Divine Wisdom—"asking with" deceptive intent. They asked for judgment regarding the "living child" and the "dead child." Solomon, knowing their true nature (as he controlled demons with his ring), rendered a judgment that forced them to reveal themselves or flee.

5.3 Who Was Actually Taken to Paradise?

  • Enoch's Ascension: Genesis 5:24 states, "And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him." In the apocryphal Book of Enoch (1 Enoch), he is taken to Paradise and transformed into the angel Metatron much like how Lilith was both fully human and also became fully demoness while retaining her humanity while becoming the mother of demons.

  • Relation to Lilith and Naamah: Enoch/Metatron is the cosmic antagonist to Lilith while he records the sins of the Watchers (whom Naamah seduced, causing her to birth the Nephilim).

6. Conclusion

The landscape of spirit languages is a testament to the human desire to breach the veil of the material world. Enochian remains the most sophisticated attempt, a complex, grammar-rich system birthed from the scrying sessions of Dee and Kelley and maintained today by orders like the Golden Dawn and scholars like Aaron Leitch. In contrast, the Celestial and Malachim scripts of Agrippa serve as silent, talismanic ciphers, preserving the sanctity of divine names through geometry. The modern Enns, attributed to the elusive Alexander Willit, represent a shift toward vibrational, mantric magic in the Demonolatry community, prioritizing sonic resonance over linguistic syntax.
